Daphne
In the beginning, there was water.
The body had no beginning, no end.
Daphne is a nymph, daughter of the river god Peneus.
After a conflict between Apollo and the god of love, Amor, Daphne is cursed to feel no sexual desire, while Apollo falls madly in love with her. He pursues her relentlessly, never letting go, and she flees until, seeing no other way out, she begs her father to transform her into a laurel tree.
The body had no beginning, no end. Until it finds itself as a battleground for patriarchal power struggles. Who owns the body? Where do we end?
How can we talk about violence? How do we want to talk about it?
Bodies desire. Bodies are violated. Bodies remain silent.
Bodies have to find some way to deal with it.
We worked scenically on Ovid’s telling of Daphne.
We will move, flow, make music, speak, and listen. Baroque music will meet electronic sounds.
We are addressing sexual assault, violence, and feelings of powerlessness.
We want to discover how a language can emerge from powerlessness. We want to find out what happens when we find the courage to turn to each other, to trust, and ultimately to care for and be there for one another.
